  • Personal Safety And Social Responsibility as set out in table A-Vl/l-4

Personal Survival Techniques

This syllabus covers the requirements for the STCW Convention 1978 as amended and Code Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1 and META manual Vol. II, Appendix M-VI/IA. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in personal survival techniques, a trainee will be able to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.

The trainee will be able to:

  1. Don a lifejacket
  2. .Don and use an immersion suit
  3. Safely jump from a height into the water
  4. Right an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket
  5. Swim while wearing a lifejacket
  6. Keep afloat without a lifejacket
  7. Board a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a lifejacket
  8. Take initial actions on boarding survival craft to enhance chance of survival
  9. Stream a drogue or sea-anchor
  10. Operate survival craft equipment
  11. Operate location devices, including radio equipment

Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

This course is designed to prepare new recruits for life on a ship at sea where they will experience a vastly different living and working environment compared to that if they were living and working ashore. Working on a ship can be a hazardous occupation for the uninitiated. This course will give new seafarers an insight into the various elements of a ship and working procedures on board so that they adjust to the shipboard environment and are better prepared to cope with any unforeseen circumstances.

Trainees successfully completing this course will be able to:

  •  comply with emergency procedures
  •  take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment
  •  observe safe working practices
  •  contribute to effective communications  on board ship
  •  contribute to effective human relationships on board ship
  •  understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue
  •  take necessary actions regards seafarers bill of rights

Elementary First Aid

This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section VI/1, Table A VI/1-3 and META Manual Vol-II, Appendix M-VI/IC.  On meeting the minimum standard of competence in elementary first aid, a trainee will be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills of the person in charge of medical care on board.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

This syllabus covers the requirements of the  STCW Convention 1978 as amended, Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2 and Table A-VI/1-2. On meeting the minimum standards of competence in fire prevention and fire fighting, a trainee will be competent to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the ship and to use fire appliances correctly.
